I have a Siberian Husky mixed with German Shepard. She’s absolutely beautiful with all the various colors and patterns. She looks like a normal husky yet with golden tan markings like that of a Shepard. One eye is ice blue and the other golden brown. Diversity can be a powerful and beautiful thing. Siberian Ginseng is one of those incredibly powerful and beautiful substances. It supports so many different things. It almost seems as if there’s nothing it can’t do.
Eleutherococcus senticosus, commonly referred to as Siberian ginseng or Eleuthero, has been a staple in traditional Chinese and Russian medicine for centuries due to its health benefits. Although it is botanically distinct from true ginseng species like Korean and American ginseng, it shares similar beneficial properties. The plant requires several years to grow, with its roots, which resemble a parsnip, capable of living over a hundred years. In China, Siberian ginseng has been used for more than 4000 years. The Russians later identified its ginseng-like qualities despite its different botanical classification.
The root of the Siberian ginseng plant is commonly used to make medicine. Known as an “adaptogen,” it is believed to bolster the body’s strength and resistance to stress. Besides its adaptogenic uses, Siberian ginseng is employed to treat cardiovascular conditions such as high and low blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and rheumatic heart disease. It is also utilized for kidney disease, Alzheimer’s, ADHD, chronic fatigue syndrome, diabetes, high cholesterol, peripheral neuropathy, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis, hangovers, flu, colds, chronic bronchitis, and tuberculosis, and to alleviate chemotherapy side effects. It is also used to enhance athletic performance, address insomnia, and treat herpes simplex type 2 symptoms. Siberian ginseng is also used to boost the immune system, prevent colds, and increase appetite. In manufacturing, it is added to skincare products.
Don’t confuse Siberian ginseng with other ginseng varieties. It is different from American or Panax ginseng, which are typically more expensive. Years ago, the Soviet Union sought a more affordable alternative to provide its athletes with ginseng-like benefits, leading to the popularity of Siberian ginseng and resulting in most research on it being conducted in Russia.
Siberian ginseng contains a variety of chemicals that influence the brain, immune system, and certain hormones. It may also have compounds effective against some bacteria and viruses.
The benefits of Siberian ginseng have been recognized for centuries. The Chinese have used it for its tonic properties, and the Russians studied it in the late 1950s as a ginseng alternative, coining the term “adaptogen” to describe substances that help the body adapt to stress. Siberian ginseng contains eleutherosides, which help balance the effects of stress. It normalizes the body’s response to stress, regulates adrenal hormone production and secretion, and strengthens the adrenal glands, which is especially beneficial for those with chronic stress. It also supports the central nervous system, aiding in the restoration of proper neurological function after prolonged stress.
Siberian ginseng is primarily used to boost energy by stimulating adrenal glands to produce energizing hormones and enzymes. It increases white blood cell counts, enhancing immunity against infections. It improves mental performance, quickening reaction times, enhancing learning and memory, sharpening vision, and strengthening hearing. It has been shown to lower blood sugar levels, making it helpful for Type II diabetes. Traditionally used to increase sexual desire, research indicates it affects female sex hormones. It can alleviate arthritis-related pain but should be avoided by those with rheumatoid arthritis. Other reported benefits include treating headaches, backaches, normalizing menstruation, easing childbirth, countering menopausal hot flashes, aiding weight loss, and improving skin health.
Well, if you’re not impressed by Siberian Ginseng now, you probably never will be.
